In Calgary, ParklandGEO completed multiple Phase 1 ESAs on nearly 40 properties required for land acquisition or lease termination for the development and construction of the Southwest Calgary Ring Road Project (SWCRR). The Phase 1 ESAs were conducted in 2014, and from the investigations ParklandGEO identified a high environmental risk on one property.
ParklandGEO subsequently completed a Phase 2 ESA on this property, as well as two other properties, which were identified by another consultant on a separate portion of the road alignment. The properties had a variety of contaminants of concern, including hydrocarbons, metals, and salinity impacts. The three Phase 2 ESAs were conducted at the end of 2014, extending into the early portion of 2015 and included electromagnetic conductivity surveys (EM 31 and EM 38) for salinity impacts, borehole drilling, and groundwater monitoring.
The Phase 2 ESAs were undertaken to confirm the presence of contamination, assess the migration potential of the impacts, identify contamination for future remediation, or to rule out contamination on the properties. Properties under investigation included a former maintenance yard, and two properties within the Tsuu T’ina First Nation including a service station with underground storage tanks and a former Canadian National Defence property.
Work included multiple coordinated Phase 1 ESAs, restrictive time lines, site inspections, Phase 2 ESAs, First Nations consultations, client liaison, reporting and recommendations.
