A private home owner retained ParklandGEO to conduct a slope assessment on their property for a proposed building addition to an existing home overlooking Sylvan Lake, Alberta. The proposed building addition is located near the crest of the natural slope on the north shore of the lake.
A geotechnical investigation was conducted which included the drilling of one deep borehole along the slope crest. All soil samples were returned to ParklandGEO’s Red Deer laboratory for selected testing to determine soil properties. A review of topographic maps, aerial photographs, site photographs, and local water well records of the area was also conducted.
The slope assessment was intended to provide the developer with a reasonable expectation with respect to slope stability and potential for slope movement; and to communicate the technical risks so that informed development decisions can be made relating to the slope.
The investigation concluded that the construction of the proposed home addition was not expected have a significant impact on the stability of the slope, and that the potential for a major slope movement was low under present normal conditions with reasonable variation
